&lt;p&gt;Like I said in the article, /usr/local is my domain and I like to manage it with stow.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Instead, I put it here:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;/usr/local/ports/&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I just hate superfluous top level directories on my disk.&lt;/p&gt;

		<description>&lt;p&gt;As a long-time MacPorts/DarwinPorts user, I can only very strongly recommend that you do not install MacPorts configured to use /usr/local. By doing so, you are shooting yourself in the foot. /opt/local was chosen for a several good reasons. See the FAQ:&lt;/p&gt;
